Northern Kentucky University, also known as simply NKU, is a public, co-educational university located in Highland Heights, which is a city in Campbell County, in the US state of Kentucky, with a population estimated at a number of more than 6500 inhabitants, during the 2000 census.
NKU traces its roots back in 1943, when it first started as an extension campus for the University of Kentucky, which was opened in Covington, known as the UK Northern Extension Center, which, after 20 years of operation became an independent college, NKU being originally founded as Northern Kentucky State College (NKSC). The institution adopted its current name in 1976, 4 years after it was moved to its present location.
Northern Kentucky University is academically organized into 6 colleges, through which it offers its students various educational programs, in different fields of study, the colleges being: College of Arts and Sciences, Haile/US Bank College of Business, College of Education and Human Services, College of Informatics, College of Health Professions and Salmon P. Chase College of Law.
NKU's athletic teams are known as the Norse, Lady Norse, Norsemen or Lady Norsemen, which compete in NCAA Division II, in various sports, including in women's basketball, in which the team became NKU's first national championship team, in 2000, by winning the NCAA Women's Division II Basketball Championship, ending their season with a 32-2 record. NKU's athletic teams have also experinced victory in many other of the sports in which they compete, including women's soccer, in which the team was the NCAA Division II runner-up in 2000 and advanced to the NCAA Division II Final Four in 1999 and 2001.
